The Apartment Security Checklist
If you are renting a place make sure you are moving to a secure area.
Here are a few things to check for:
• All sidewalks, parking lots, garages, laundry facilities, stairs, entrances and hallways must be well-lit all the time.
• If apartment doors open to an interior hallway there must be a secure system to enter via a key or code.
• Make sure that your apartment has both deadbolt and lock if the doors open to the exterior of the building.
• Make sure fire escapes are above the ground floor and locked from the inside.
• Mailboxes should be in a well-lit area.
• Mailboxes must have quality locks to permit mail theft.
• Make sure the landlord fixes maintenance problems quickly. Especially burnt out lights, as they offer protection to the thieves.
