Security Tips for the Exterior of the Home
Make sure you have lights on the sidewalks of your home; it is the place where intruders first “evaluate” your home. The appearance of your home from the street is what makes the intruders decide whether to go for that house or not. So let us have a look at your house from the burglar’s-eye.
Start by examining the landscaping around your home. Do you have any hiding places like over grown shrubs or grass? Trees near your house can offer a ladder to break in. Even a disordered lawn can give an inviting impression for the burglars.
How easy is it to get to your windows and doors? The intruders first assess how easy is it to enter the house and get out of it. If the backyard is not fenced, or the attached garage does not have any windows visible from the street it can make access and exit easy.
Thankfully the solutions to make your house are really simple.
Start making your house less appealing to burglars by following these landscaping tips:
- Pick up the yard and driveway regularly
- Make sure there are no papers piling up on the front door. It makes it appear that the house is empty.Make sure the ladders, chairs, picnic tables are out of sight. When not is use, store them where the intruders cannot see them.
- Cut the branches of the trees that are close to the house or those that hang over the roof. This will help prevent the intruders climb on the roof or reach the high windows.
- Cut back or remove tall shrubs near doors.
- Make sure there are no tall plants near the windows or doors. Keep the plants shorter than 3 feet.
- Use gravel or pebbles under windows, as they make a sound under the feet and will make the intruder run away.
- You may also plant thorny bushes.
- Make sure the view of your house is clear from your neighbor’s homes.
- Make sure there are no bushes in between trees, if so trim them, allowing the neighbors a clear view of your home is a good security measure.
